Sawit Malaysia First Anaerobic Digestion Plant Successfully Reduces Estate Electricity Costs

Not long ago we wrote about the bog opportunity that palm oil plantation waste provides for renewable energy production, so we are pleased to be able to carry this article as Sawit announces the success its first biogas plant.

(The video below is about biogas from palm oil, but the company is not associated with the organisation described in the article.)

The Sawit Kinabalu Group on Thursday officially launched that itwill develop a biogas power plant at its Apas Balung estate refinery in Tawau, which has proven very effective in reducing the estate's electricity cost.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, who officiated at the opening, is confident that the presence of the biogas plant will also help the Group's image as an environment-friendly organisation, apart from reducing its operational costs.

He said the State Government very much welcomed the initiative, in line with its policies and halatuju which emphasises on sustainable economic development.

"I would like to stress that the State Government is committed in developing this State without disregarding environmental conservation," he said.

He also hoped more oil palm companies would emulate the move by the Group by venturing into new fields like biogas power plant development, which not only contributes to protecting the environment but also boosts the development of renewable energy in the State.

The Group's Managing Director, Othman Walat, who was also present, said the biogas plant has helped in the Group's effort to increase its efficiency and profit to RM3.28 million per annum.

The biogas plant has helped the Apas Balung estate refinery in reducing its diesel utilisation cost by 85 per cent, he said, adding the percentage is equivalent to increasing the refinery's production income by RM1.14 million a year.

Othman said that apart from reducing the refinery's production cost, because of the diesel utilisation cost, the biogas plant was also built primarily to help reduce environmental pollution in the Balung area.

"I was informed by the surrounding residents that since the biogas plant began its operation, bad smell coming from the refinery has significantly reduced. The liquid waste discharge from the refinery also went down from 91-100ppm to 30-40ppm or equivalent to a 60 per cent reduction," he said.

He said the Group intends to continue with this effort to boost further its production income through its "turning waste into wealth" project, that is making use of the oil palm waste for various purposes.

Among its plans are to build a livestock feed production mill based on palm waste at the estate as well as seven more biogas plants for its other refineries within the next five years, he said.

This is in line with the Group's mission to create sustainable wealth by running environment-friendly business, he said, adding all these are part of fulfilling the organisation's corporate obligation.

Swedish Help Begins a New Era in Which India Will Produce Biogas From Sewage Sludge

This is good news for the west and shows that India is becoming a participant in global warming prevention.

The Delhi Jal Board ready to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Swedish central authority for upgrading its sewage treatment plant at Keshopur, with a capacity of 72 million gallons a day, for the purposes of manufacturing biogas from sewage sludge. The 2 year pilot project, first of it's type in India, suggests to utilize the sludge produced in the sewage treatment process and change it to compressed biogas that'd be entirely compatible with Delhi's grid of Compressed Natural Gas ( CNG ).

The DJB will then use the gas to fuel over 120 DTC buses at the Keshopur filling station. We understand that DJB is a stakeholder / financier in the project, providing land and gas for the project.

We are going to consider commercial sales later on dependent on the successfulness of this pilot project," DJB's chief engineer for the project. For the upgrade and distribution of biogas, a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU ) will be signed on Wed. between the DJB, Indraprastha Gas Limited and Swedish company KG Renewables L.T.D , in the shadow Delhi Chief Secretary P K Tripathi and Swedish envoy Lars-Olof Lindgren. The Keshopur STP will ne able to produce up to 25,000 cubic metre of the newable fuel/ gas each day.

Here is a quote from the news item:

"The signing of the MoU is supported by the Government of Sweden and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, in line with the Indo-Swedish MoU on renewable energy. It is an innovative way to achieve energy conservation" DJB CEO Ramesh Negi said.

"The new technology will upgrade biogas to the highest-quality CNG, and will ensure minimal leakage of methane. It will also contribute to environment conservation by reducing 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year," a DJB official said.

Biogas is produced through the process of Anaerobic Digestion.

Biogas from sewage plant to help make CNG - Indian Express

The biogas generated during the treatment of sewage at Asia's largest Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Bharwara in Lucknow might be used for the production of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The state government has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for selection of a private agency for the production and marketing of CNG. The STP was commissioned about seven months ago.

The project of CNG generation using biogas will be based on Public-Private Partnership model. The selected agency will be given land at the STP site for 25 years for installation of required infrastructure and use the biogas for production and marketing of CNG. The
amount of biogas expected to be generated from STP is approximately 402.50 cubic metre per hour.

As per the EOI, after 25 years the CNG plant will be transferred to the state government, which may select any new agency to operate the plant. During first 25 years, the private agency will make monthly payment to the UP Jal Nigam for the actual quantity of bio gas used for CNG generation. It will also pay Jal Nigam, which is running the STP, a certain share from its profit. Meanwhile, UP Jal Nigam has planned a site visit cum pre-bid meeting at Bharwara on September 2.
